Tension Headaches | What are they?
Tension headaches are extremely common and generally caused by tight muscles in the head, neck, and shoulders. Chronic headaches can be debilitating, disrupting your life day to day. Some people experience headaches everyday. Headaches usually bring on a dull, consistent pain, making you feel like your head is in a vice. A common source for headaches result in tension of muscles in the shoulders and neck. This could be induced by poor posture, stress, even dehydration. Tension headaches are also known as a stress based headache, that resulted in pain wrapping like a band around both sides of your head. Neck pain can also result in common headaches as well.
Tension Headache | Symptoms
Tension headaches have two main categories — episodic and chronic. Episodic tension headaches can last anywhere from 30 minutes to a week. If your headaches appear 15 or more days a month for at least three months, they’re considered chronic tension headaches.
Some common signs of tension headaches are as follows:
- Dull, band-like pressure around the skull
- Shoulders, head, and neck are sensitive
- Pain is worse in the scalp, temples, and back of the neck
- Difficulty sleeping
- Difficulty focusing
Tension versus Migraine Headaches
Tension headaches and migraines are different in how they present and usually require different treatment approaches. Tension-type headaches cause a dull, band like pain around the head, migraines are usually limited to one side and more intense. Migraines are also accompanied with nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity, and sound sensitivity. Some people also complain of visual disturbances such as an aura before a migraine starts.

“I was referred to Dr. Centofonti through my gym after having shoulder and hip impingement issues. After just a few sessions, I was not only able to lift weights that were previously out of reach but more importantly pain-free. This allowed me to push myself even further by running my first half-marathon in sub 1:40. I can’t thank Dr. Centofonti for his knowledge and expertise in keeping me healthy and striving to hit new fitness goals.”
